Returning to sexual activity

Returning to sexual activity after a period of inactivity can be an issue at any age, but especially during the menopausal years. The first thing to remember is that having an understanding partner is important. You may have to take it slow and easy at first to get a sense of how your body is responding. The next important thing is LUBE! I always say that "couples of every age need lube" but it's critical when estrogen levels decline and the vulva/vaginal tissues become thinner and less elastic. There are water-based, silicone-based and hybrid varieties, along with pantry staples such as coconut oil or olive oil. gennev has some good products and there are many over-the-counter. Try different types to find the one you and your partner like best. Then be generous with the lube. Put it on both partners and reapply as necessary. There are some products, including vaginal inserts, that can  moisturize/lubricate from the inside out instead of just being topical. Specifically, KY Liquibeads have been lifesavers for some of my patients. Twice a week to maintain or at least 30" before having sex. Then, if responsiveness/elasticity is still a problem and especially if you have pain, consider a vaginal estrogen product to restore some of the tissue quality. It may take a few weeks to reach optimal restoration, but vaginal estrogen can be a game-changer for atrophy and typically has very little systemic absorption. Vaginal estrogen can be used without some of the concerns that may apply to systemic HRT; it can be a stand-alone prescription or a companion to systemic HRT for those who need it.  An appointment with one of our gennev health professionals can help you decide if it's an appropriate medication for you. Oh, and P.S...even if you are using HRT, you will probably still need a lubricant for sex.

As Lisa mentioned, there are so many different types of lubes, and of course we are biased, but we highly recommend Gennev, because we formulated ours for vaginal health - no fragrance, no parabens, no oils.  Here is the link to the Gennev Intimate Moisture: https://shop.gennev.com/collections/fun/products/gennev-intimate-moisture . Use code GENNEV10 if you are a first time customer for 10% off.
